After the last reaction video I had to queue up another Calva Louise tune. What I did not expect was what the next tune would be. I was kind of blown away when it melted into further genres, heavier rock, more guitar that I didn’t expect, and other vocal and stylistic changes that the previous song just didn’t set my expectations to. This new song was an entirely different creation with an entirely different vibe, feel, meaning, and aura – completely outside of theme from the previous.
I write all that with emphasis because no matter the band it is extremely rare when any artist or band deviates to this degree. Usually when an artist deviates it’s less than well accepted and often kind of – let’s be honest – a train wreck. Sometimes bands pull it off but pull it off is as rare as the deviations themselves. Calva Louise flawlessly moves between, and even merges these styles, deviations, and other variances beautifully!
The two songs in this VLOG, are from Calva Louise’s recent series of songs—”Third Class Citizen”, “Feast is Over”, “Square One”, and “Over The Threshold”—which showcases the band’s dynamic range and innovative spirit in the modern punk and alternative rock scene. Each track not only stands on its own with unique energy and storytelling but also contributes to a cohesive narrative when listened to as a series, reflecting on themes of struggle, resilience, and rebellion against societal constraints – specifically in the videos the world in which has been created that the songs are in reflection of. Spider invasion and all!
“Third Class Citizen” kicks off with an electrifying energy, combining gritty guitar riffs with anthemic choruses. The song is a powerful opener, setting a tone of defiance and dissatisfaction with the status quo. It’s an urgent call to awareness, wrapped in the band’s signature blend of punk ferocity and catchy melodies.
“Feast is Over” shifts gears slightly, presenting a more introspective yet equally compelling perspective. The track delves into the aftermath of excess and the realization that change is necessary. Musically, it balances between explosive moments and quieter, more reflective passages, showcasing the band’s ability to navigate complex emotional landscapes with finesse.
“Square One” represents a moment of introspection and the acknowledgment of needing to start anew. Its lyrics resonate with the feeling of being stuck but yearning for a breakthrough. The musical arrangement complements this sentiment perfectly, with a mix of driving rhythms and moments of melodic contemplation, creating a sense of hope amidst uncertainty.
Finally, “Over The Threshold” concludes the series on a note of triumph over adversity. It encapsulates the journey from feeling like a third-class citizen to overcoming barriers. The song is a rousing finale, bursting with optimism and the determination to move forward. It’s a celebration of resilience, with an infectious energy that encourages listeners to push through their own thresholds.
Together, these four tracks are a testament to Calva Louise’s artistry and their ability to convey complex emotions through a blend of sharp lyrics, compelling melodies, and high-energy performances. The series not only reinforces the band’s place in the punk and alternative rock landscape but also pushes the genre forward, proving that music can be both a mirror to our times and a hammer with which to shape them.
These two songs as stated, are two of a 4 part series of songs. The others, including these two, in order, are as follows:
Part 1 “Third Class Citizen“
Part 2 “Feast is Over“
Part 3 “Square One“
Part 4 “Over The Threshold“
